The doctor question

How can I check the person offering care?

Before comparing plans, ask who would assess you. Get the full name and the state in which they are allowed to practise.

Look at the board record

Doctor licensing and discipline are handled by state medical boards.

The public record gives the doctor’s licence status and whatever disciplinary history that state publishes.

  • Open the medical board directory in note a and select your state.
  • Find the doctor by name in the board’s own search.
  • Compare the name and licence details with the details the service gives you.

A search showing no public discipline tells you about the record, without measuring how well the doctor provides care.

Check the state where the visit happens

During a visit from home, your location matters. The doctor needs permission for the state you are in during that visit. Licensing rules also apply wherever the doctor works. Federal health guidance checked September 26, 2026 explains both requirements.

Some states let an out-of-state health professional register for remote care instead of obtaining a full licence. The terms differ by state, as of September 26, 2026.

  • What permission covers the state where I will be sitting?
  • Where can I check that permission?
  • Does travelling change whether this visit can happen?

If medicine is proposed, ask who supplies it

The doctor’s record does not answer the pharmacy question. A board of pharmacy handles pharmacy licensing in each state.

  • Ask for the dispensing pharmacy’s name.
  • Ask whether the named pharmacy prepares the medicine as well as sending it.
  • Use the government pharmacy lookup in note c to check the name.
